DB Cooper: The Man Who Fell Into Legend
On the rainy afternoon of November 24th, 1971, a man in a dark suit and black tie walked up to the counter at Portland International Airport, purchased a one-way ticket to Seattle under the name Dan Cooper, and boarded Northwest Orient Flight 305 with a briefcase.
By the end of that day, he would become one of the most infamous and mysterious figures in American criminal history: DB Cooper.
In this episode of Mystery Date, we break down the bold hijacking that captured the nation’s imagination, stumped the FBI for decades, and evolved into one of the greatest unsolved cases of the 20th century.
A Hijacking with Style

The man known as Cooper was polite. Calm. Even charming, according to the flight crew. He passed a note to a flight attendant—who initially thought it was a phone number—before leaning in and calmly stating: “Miss, you’d better look at that note. I have a bomb.”
He showed her a briefcase containing wires and red cylinders. Then, without panic or fanfare, he laid out his demands:
$200,000 in cash
Four parachutes
A fuel truck waiting on the tarmac in Seattle
When the plane landed in Seattle, the passengers were released unharmed. Cooper kept several crew members aboard, received his cash and parachutes, and instructed the pilot to chart a new course toward Mexico City—flying low and slow.
At around 8:13 PM, as the plane flew over the rugged forests of Washington state, Cooper opened the rear staircase and jumped into the stormy night.
He was never seen again.
The Investigation: A Trail That Vanished

The FBI launched an immediate and massive investigation, dubbed NORJAK (Northwest Hijacking), chasing thousands of leads. They interviewed everyone who had ever served in the military, worked in aviation, or had a background in parachuting. Over the decades, more than 800 suspects were considered.
Despite their efforts, Cooper's real identity, whereabouts, and ultimate fate remain unknown.
In 1980, a young boy digging in the sand near the Columbia River found a decaying bundle of cash—$5,800 in weathered $20 bills, matching the ransom serial numbers. It’s the only portion of the money ever recovered.
But Cooper himself? No body, no parachute, no trace.
Did He Survive? Or Did He Die in the Fall?

While some experts believe Cooper was a skilled jumper who executed a perfect getaway, others argue he likely didn't survive the jump. He chose a non-steerable parachute, carried no helmet, and jumped into freezing rain and near-complete darkness over rough terrain.
If he died in the wilderness, why hasn’t more of the money—or his body—ever been found?
That unanswered question is what fuels the enduring fascination with the DB Cooper case.
Theories, Suspects, and the Legend That Won’t Die

Over the years, numerous suspects have been floated, including:
Richard Floyd McCoy, a former Green Beret who hijacked a plane in a similar fashion months later.
Robert Rackstraw, a Vietnam vet with explosives training who matched some composite sketches.
Even theories about Cooper being a former airline employee or someone with inside knowledge of flight operations.
Still, none of these leads panned out. In 2016, after 45 years of searching, the FBI officially closed the case, citing a lack of actionable evidence. Cooper, it seems, had truly vanished.
But the legend lives on.
Pop Culture’s Favorite Mystery Man
DB Cooper’s story has become a part of American pop culture. He’s been referenced in:
Loki (Marvel series)
Prison Break
Without a Paddle
Leverage, and many documentaries and books
Bars in Washington hold Cooper-themed parties each year, complete with parachutes and mock FBI manhunts. People dress up as him for Halloween. There’s even a DB Cooper Days Festival in Ariel, Washington.
Cooper isn’t just a criminal. He’s a folk hero. An outlaw who, depending on how you look at it, got away with the ultimate middle finger to the system—without hurting anyone.
Mystery Meets Romance: Our Take
We couldn't resist diving into this rabbit hole. In true Mystery Date fashion, this episode blends deep research with a casual, conversational tone as we unravel the heist, the hunt, and the hype surrounding DB Cooper.
We also take a lighter turn at the end with our signature “date night debrief,” where we imagine how DB Cooper would plan a modern-day date (hint: it’s not at 30,000 feet), share some of our own spontaneous date ideas, and laugh about how even the most mysterious people probably just want to skip the small talk and go parachuting.
Why DB Cooper Still Matters
What makes the DB Cooper story endure isn’t just the mystery—it’s the way it makes us wonder.
What if he really did get away? What if he’s still out there, older now, sipping a drink and laughing at the fact that no one ever caught him?
Or what if he died in the forest, never knowing he’d become a legend?
Either way, DB Cooper left behind more than a trail of unanswered questions—he left behind a legacy of mystery, curiosity, and just a little rebellion.
